ABOUT
At Groundworks BJJ, we provide a fun and safe place for Adults and Kids to learn the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the Washington DC metro area. We are a Team Yamasaki affiliate located in Washington, DC next to the Tenleytown metro station. Whether your goal is self defense, fitness, MMA, or just learning this great sport, we are here to help you achieve your goals in a fun and positive way. We have built a community around the core values of learning, personal development, and mutual respect; all are welcome.
If you are new to BJJ and wondering if it's for you, we encourage you to schedule a free intro class. We run you through a high level overview of what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is and answer any questions you may have about the sport. Your first class will be catered to you depending on your comfort level and experience, and you can participate as much, or as little as you want.
Our Kids program helps teach children self defense, confidence, and discipline. We describe our program as being a mix between martial arts and a competitive sports program (like wrestling).

WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
BJJ is a combat sport and martial art based on ground fighting. The main objective is to take your opponent to the ground and use leverage and technique to subdue your opponent via a chokehold or joint lock. While this sounds violent, BJJ is a martial art in which you can defend yourself without hurting the other person. Our sport revolves around techniques and training that allow a weaker, smaller person, to control and neutralize a larger, stronger opponent.
